End of the Year Writing Prompts on All That We Have Learned
I love asking my students what they learned this year. They need help reflecting on all that they have learned but once we start brainstorming, the list gets longer and longer! I ask my students to write about they are most proud of learning. For some, this may be learning to read or learning to add and subtract. For others, it may be learning to tie their shoes or learning to take deep breaths when they are upset. I try to honor ALL that they have learned this year, not just academics.
Writing Prompts about the Classroom Community We Have Built
One of my goals as a teacher is to have my students really feel at home in the classroom. At the end of the year, I encourage them to draw out their favorite place in the classroom. It’s also good information for me about what areas of the classroom are student favorites, especially as I get the end of the year reorganizing bug (anyone else?).
Another end of the year writing prompt I love to use is asking about their friends. I have them draw and write their friends name in their memory books. End of the Year Writing Prompts that make You Laugh
Perhaps my all-time favorite end of the year writing prompt asks students about their teacher. They write some of the things I have done this year or the things I like or don’t like. Then I ask them to write down something that I always say. This writing prompt always makes me laugh to see what they remember me always saying. It’s definitely one to try with your students!

When providing your students with end of the year writing prompts, think about prompts that will encourage reflection of all they have learned, fun they have had, and the classroom community they have been a part of. There is a lot going on at the end of the year, so I find that the simpler the prompts the better chance there is of them being completed independently.
